My older go to rattle canned 16" with my new waiting to be rattle canned 16".... I painted it a few years back after watching a video of a SF guy on how animals have lighter undersides and are darker on top for a natural camo pattern.. kinda what I was going for... I guess there is no right or wrong, just painted or un painted.

Just lay down your base coat then I spray my secondary colors in plastic cups. Take your natural sea sponge and dab the other colors on the rifle however suits your taste. I’ll try and get the colors once I’m home but they’re just regular Krylon cans at Walmart. |

Painted this a while ago, but finally got around to doing a stamp For my dedicated 22. I was going for a faux cerakote thing. Painted with my remaining Aervoe stash. Wasn’t perfect but came out okay. Attached File |

After many years of spray can painting many, MANY firearms I have just a few tips that really help: 1. Clean and de-grease everything very well. When you think you are done, clean and de-grease a second time, it really does make a difference. 2. Use paints designed for high temperatures. Auto shops sell paints designed for painting auto headers and those paints work really well. 3. Use primer for an undercoat. Not only will primer help the next paint colors to stick better, primer will also gives the next coat of paint a greater depth of color and make it appear much brighter. 4. Allow the primer plenty of time to dry really well before applying the next color. Even if the primer feels like it is dry, giving the primer an extra couple of days to harden makes big difference. The same applies to the color coats..give the paints an extra day or two to dry really will make a difference. |

Could not resist painting my SBR...finally cured after a few days. Chose a pattern that could leave a spot unpainted...for leaving the engraving untouched:

 Rust-O 2x Flat Black Tore up Frog Tape RAPCO 34087 Lusterless "Khaki" Olive Drab over the whole gun Sprayed RAPCO 34094 "383" Green C.A.R.C. Substitute onto a plate and brushed it on. Sprayed a mix of Rust-O Flat Army Green and Flat Earth Brown onto a plate and brushed it on. Only the second gun I've painted. Love it! |
| Very good thread. I'm considering attempting some painting. I really want an all FDE rifle, but have found it hard to find a good receiver set with matching handguard that isn't insanely expensive. And the closest place that does cerakoting is 3 hours away, so I thought I might try painting and upper, lower, handguard and buffer tube. |

Just tested out rustoleum camo series "sand" on a defective aero receiver (that's why I didnt bother plugging any holes) and I'm pleasantly surprised how good it looks. I've been wanting an all FDE rifle for a while, this might be the way. Now if I let it sit and cure for a few days, should I still use a coat of clear matte on it or won't it matter much?
