Ok..Im an idiot. Ive worked with BLO hundreds of times..never had an issue with the rags. Today, I oiled one of my rifles and left the rags in a small pile on concrete floor, thinking I would take them to work in the morning to wash in our industrial washer. When I went into the garage I smelled something burning and found this smoldering pile of rags....So todays PSA is..be mindful of your rags(and Im an idiot)!

Yep, it will do that.

Just after my parents got married, dad was redoing a coffee table.  Got done and threw the rags in the corner of the basement.

Went back down a couple hours later to see the pile of rages burst into flames.

I always rinse the rags out with water and then place them in a bucket of water before disposing them into the trash very wet.

What caused them to ignite? Does BLO have some sort of exothermic reaction when exposed to air?

Our office building recently caught fire under similar circumstances. A floor in the building was being remodeled and someone had oil soaked rags in a trash can. It ignited somehow.

I'm a fireman.  Seen it many times.  The above listed water process is what I do.   I also leave them in a bucket away from the house.  It's a fascinating thing though.
