Have an 870 that is a couple of years old.  It lives in the safe in my garage most of the time and has developed some very superficial surface rust.  I acquired a set of Magpul stock and foregrip in FDE and want to give it a makeover.  What is the best method for removing the rust, prepping, and painting this thing.  I looked at most of the threads and could not find a decent step by step tutorial.  If this goes well, I will probably post a tutorial for the next dummy that is clueless.

What tools/materials will I need for rust removal? What grit paper and what oil?

How should I prep any surface that I plan to paint that is not rusty?

What kind of paint should I use (I plan to put some kind of pattern on the thing- thinking of a khaki/brown mesh laundry bag camo combo)

How many coats of paint should I use?

how long will it need to dry between coats?

Your professional or non-professional opinion is appreciated!

I don't have an answer to all of your questions, but here is a start:  you might try using a very fine steel wool and some gun oil.  if it really is just surface rust, some very light rubbing with the oil should take it off without taking the underlying finish off, too.  look for some super fine #0000 steel wool.

I use gun oil or penetrating oil along with a brass brush and some #0000 steel wool for minor surface rust that doesn't require a re finish. I there is pitting I may go with a large grit paper and work my way all the way down to a super fine grit. Then refinish....
