I'm new to refinishing and am looking to do my own soon.  Did a trial run with a paint gun I had on a rubber M4...completely covered the damn thing in paint.  Is there a specific tool you guys use or do you just use straight spray paint? Also, I used latex lol....felt really dumb after I realized I bought latex. Thank goodness I didn't get cocky and use a real weapon.  Any answers or advice you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Hobby sprayer, you can fine turn the amount of paint needed.

I use an airbrush - a Badger 350 single action/external mix - and my regular compressor. I've been happy with that.

At risk of pimping myself too much, I did a quick video on duracoating. There's LOTS of others out there too; I *highly* recommend the ones from Youtube user IraqVeteran8888.

Awesome and thank you! Once I get out of work, I'll go ahead and check out your video as well as those from IraqVet.  Much appreciated again.

Thanks!

I meant to do more as I was working on the wife's AR (which is what those parts are going into in about ten minutes), but ... well, forgot.

I've got a boatload of DuraCoat left, so I'm thinking about playing with an NEF/H&R shotgun I've got kicking around, trying a winter/brush look. I'll try to remember to post that one. (Of course, my compressor crapped out TODAY when I went to kick it on, so it may be a while for a vid.)

OP - if you have any questions about the duracoat process, feel free to PM me, I'll help where I can. No expert but pretty comfortable with it. Also, Lauer is AWESOME about answering questions - they answered an email in 35 minutes. (I hate using the phone.)

nice stuff! seems like ive been doing alot of small parts lately. ive been using picture hanging wire(degreased!) for things like triggers and anything that has a hole. it allows me to spray front and back of the part without touching.im also a fanatic about spraying small screws. i dont  use my blast cabinet for small parts. i  run 600 grit on the top ,bottom, and sides of screws as well as the slot. i take a small cardboard box and poke a hole with a t handle allen wrench and twist the screw into the box just enough to hold it and allow the airbrush to get under the screw head.for real small screws it doesnt work so well and you have to handle them with gloves to touch up.  i give the screw like overnight to dry and then touch up.you can also cut the top of the box off and then twist the screw or bolt all the way through the cardboard to touch up the end of the screw or bolt that didnt get any duracoat. ive also found re-installing duracoated screws can get boogered up very easy. i always try out a few screwdriver bits to makes sure its a tight fit and use a drop of oil. i found it helps not chip up the duracoat because a screwdriver can grind out and expose shiny metal real quck especially small screws. it kinda bothers me to see a little exposed metal on a screw slot after duracoating a whole gun perfect.its funny after duracaoting a while you really start paying attention to detail.

Well I do appreciate that!  I ordered the Shake 'N Spray kit from the DuraCoat website to start with so once that get's here I'll have myself something to do!  Judging from some of the youtube videos I watched, it looks quite simple with this stuff...too bad I hadn't found this prior to going to Lowes lol.  How well does DuraCoat work on polymer hand grips?

I didn't do it on the pistol grip, but my understanding is that it works fine on hard plastics, and tends to have issues with softer rubber. I have ERGO overmolds on my rifles, so they stay black.

I think you'll be just fine with the Shake'n'Spray, just make sure you do ALL your prep work and have things ready to go before you mix the duracoat so you can do it all at one shot. Also, you almost certainly won't need all of it... the rifle I just finished I think I used less than 4oz total, including a base coat of white on the whole thing (that was about half the usage right there).

Good to know! Should have enough then to do my rifle and M&P .40.  This weekend's plan while I'm waiting is to build a prep box out of excess plywood and 2x4s due to lack of cardboard boxes.
