I have an old 22 Marlin bolt action I picked up at a pawn shop on the cheap.  It's a great little shooter and I just started taking it out hunting.  Despite drying it off and oiling it up after use, it appears to be getting a little rust on it.

It's not really noticeable under natural light, but when I turn on the LED's in the gun cabinet, I can see the rust.

After some searching around online, I'm thinking of using some brass wool and Remoil.  Good idea, or bad idea?  Better ideas?

Oh, and the barrel is blued.

I don't know about the brass wool, I've always used 0000 steel wool.

Based on what I read, brass is a better alternative to steel, because it is softer.  The trick, of course, is finding where to buy it.

I found a place online selling 5lbs skeins of it for around $100.

Sure, I could use the practice before I start in on my own.

Yeah, I would think brass would be better, but I won't be buying $100 worth.

Me, either.  Any ideas on what else to use?  I saw a mention of a Kroil.  Never heard of it.

Thanks, hh!

A lot of people say to use bronze wool, because steel wool will leave fibers that will rust.  I've been clean firearms for 40+ years and have never seen it happen, but then again I don't know jack, just ask the ex-wife.  If it were mine I would use 0000 steel wool and whatever light oil you have on hand, just don't get carried away.  Light pressure is all you need, steel wool was what was used at the factory to buff the original buleing out (actually it's called "carding").

If you are out in the elements quite a bit, try this (after you remove the rust).  Remove the stock and degrease the action/barrel.  Then apply Johnsons Paste Wax to the metal surfaces, yup the stuff in the yellow can you buy at the grocery store.  Put it on good and heavy, and let it dry, overnight is best.  Buff it out with a clean rag, reoil the action, and reassemble.  You will be surprised how well it protects the finish, plus you don't have to worry about water that may or may not be under the stock.

Yeah, I've been using steel wool for years too and have never seen any sign of rust from it. But I am running low and think I might try the bronze.

Buy one of these. frontier 45  You can thank me later

These absolutely work.  I keep one handy at all times in my shop.  They will remove rust and do not harm the blue.  Even if you have to get aggressive.

ETA, use a lubricant with them.
