So I wanna do a paint job to my 10/22 factory stock. I dont want to go through all the hastle of stripping down to bare wood if I can avoid it.

Do I just need to scuff it with some fine sandpaper and then spray? Or should I just leave the factory finish alone and spray right over it?

Any advice / help would be appreciated.

I think you would have better luck sanding it a bit.  I just did this one.  I hit it with some 220 grit and it worked out nicely.

Here is after the sanding.

Finished product...I degreased with alcohol wipes and used Rustoleum Nutmeg for the base coat.

Hit it with some steel wool or fine sandpaper and paint.  If you have grain showing, put on a couple coats of sanding sealer to fill the pores in before painting.
