So I'm thinking of getting into this whole gun painting scene. My first project will probably be my .45 Baby Eagle. It's an older all steel model. A couple of years ago I paid a guy to Duracoat the grips. I was thinking they would turn out more tan, but they are much lighter than I expected. So now I'm thinking about doing the rest of the gun in a FDE with the hopes that it will have the same type of look as a Kimber Desert Warrior.
I have an air compressor. Should I just buy a gravity feed type paint gun from Lowes or should I pick up an airbrush set up? This will be a one color project. But if it turns out, I've got a Maverick 88 and a Yugo underfolder AK that I might get creative with. |

duracoat sells airbrush starter kits
Here Might be able to find better prices elsewhere, not sure. |
| GEt an airbrush for sure. Even a detail/door jamb gun would be fairly big for painting a rifle, let alone pistols. Airbrush will be much more versitile. A standard gravity feed gun is deisgned to lay down 6-8" strips of paint at a time. Plus you will have a LOT of overspray (need really good ventilation/fans) to where you would pretty much have to use it outside unless you have a spray booth. Airbrush you could use in basement/garage. |
