Evening gents,
Going to be duracoating a 870 here in the next week or so. This will be my first duracoat project, and I just wanted to check to see if you all had any pointers for a first timer ( other than the directions on the can). Seem fairly to the point and straightforward, but I know things arent always as easy as they seem. Any tips are appreciated guys.

prep is key, clean, clean clean, some use residue free brake cleaner, some use duraclean, Ive used all of those plus acetone.
rough up the surface...I recommend blasting with aluminum oxide.
dont use much on close tolerance surfaces.

need more info? are you hand sanding or blastin? airbrush with compressor?   if your a first timer maybe try a small part to get the hang of it. your gonna wanna rush but resist!    i use an old solid one piece gun cleaning or muzzleloader rod  and some wire to hang the barrel straight up and down. dont be afraid to get close your first time. you want a good wet coat. keep a steady flow using up-down strokes. its tough to make duracoat run but if you keep your hand flowing youll be fine. i usually will do 4 or five coats allowing 20-45 minutes between spraying. some people wait longer but this stuff flashes off and dries quick.

Light fogging passes.  Don't try to put too much on at once.

Parts will be sandblasted. I was planning on picking up Lauer's EZ spray kit and running it with my compressor. Get real close??? Too much of anything will run. Unless it's thick as syrup, but in that case it won't run though the paint gun.

RUnning with your compressor is fine, just make sure and get some disposable oil/ water inline filters.  Especially if there is high humidity near you.

the problem with my first time was being too far away. i believe 2-4 inches with the airbrush is about right. get too far away and it flashes off in mid air before laying on the metal properly. further than 6 inches gets to be too far i believe. if your too far away you will think your doing it right and get a nice coat on it thats a little textured but will scratch off easy after weeks of drying. when i called duracoat with my problem they said i got bad hardner or was too far away. they said to use a good wet coat and it has worked out much better. if youve never used an airbrush it is not like using spray paint. you have much better control and faster dry time.they also recommend 20psi on the air pressure. im right at 20-25 most times.  degrease and scrub with non chlorinated brake cleaner.  sand blast and then hang parts and blow off with filtered air  and then spray on the duracoat. duracoat will tell you not to degrease or clean off with anything other than moisture free air after sandblasting. you NEED moisture traps or water filters on your sandblaster and airbrush. shake the hell out of the mixture between coats and if you can use a seperate jar for mixing and a seperate one for spraying and one for just thinner to run through the airbrush between coats. adjust your airbrush spray pattern on a cardboard box.use good powder free nitrile gloves when moving the parts. the airbrush kit lauer duracoat gives you is the one thats often on sale at harbor freight for 5$ . i would suggest the matte black for your first try. the shiny colors like h&k black show too many imperfections. i also dont like the matte clear coat most times . i dont think the matte black needs it. clear coat is good for multi color projects as it helps to blend things out but i wouldnt use it on single colors.

Just finished it up! Thanks for all the pointers! Thanks for sending me to Harbor Freight FooFoo, you just saved me 20 bucks. The gun looks really good, time will tell if it cures well or not.
