I have some screws sights and other small parts I want to hot blue. I read the sticky above on the DIY hot bluing and was just wandering if I ordered some bluing salts from brownells use my gas hot plate and get a small bluing tank is their any reason why I could not blue these parts? I know theirs has to be a lot more to it just wandering how much more? What exactly are the steps of hot bluing and what the difference between the salts and the liquid?

I have never used the commercial blueing salts but have "whipped up' my own and have had great success blueing small steel parts. Email me if you'd like more info.

Small parts can also be nitre blued fairly easily.  Though today's modern steels don't always look as good as the results back in the day.

Still, its cheap and easy, and I use it quite a bit.  About the largest part I have tried is a Gov't model grip safety.  Here, the nitre bluing works extremely well, as grip safeties are usually made out of a simple steel, much like the original 1911s used.

Thanks for the help. What is used to hold small parts while hot bluing is there some kind of mesh steel basket or wire thongs that is used to dip them in the solution?

Yeah, a mesh basket (made out of iron or steel wire) or tie wire works fine for small stuff.
