Hi all,
I am thinking about refinishing my Taurus PT1911 with Duracoat - one of the blacks , maybe the tactical flat black.

What issues , if any, will i have with the serial numbers on the gun? will the duracoat cover them? will I need to have the numbers engraved again after refinishing?

I'm curious too... will the duracoat fill in too much engraving?

Be careful!  I had a weapon painted by a gunsmith and he sprayed it so thick it filled in everything.  Could not even tell there was engraving on the sideplate.

Done right, duracoat should not clog serial numbers or other markings.

Thank's all!

I think I will go with the ultra flat tactical black

If mixed properly and the gun is prepped properly you should be able to even make out light scratches on your rifle. I redid about 8 rifles & shotguns over about 5 weeks with blasting and duracoat. I had the misconception that duracoat would fill in pitting. 7 of the 8 guns were rusted anywhere from lite rust to heavy heavy rust with terrible pits.

The first gun I did was a 22 youth and it was the only gun with no rust. After blasting and duracoating I could not believe how perfect the model #, make, serial all came out. It just looked perfect.

After I got to the guns with rust I realized very quickly I had to buy dura Fill and fill in bad pits and sand them to get them out. It was a lot of work but I eventually got most of the rusted recievers and barrels looking nice and flat and like new again.

I live in Austin, Tx and the weather down here over the summer is either hot or hot and rainy. There we two guns that I painted either hours before a rain storm hit or even a day after the rain stopped and I had to strip and re do the guns. I can't speak for everyone but my experience is only paint if you have perfect weather conditions! Or an idoor temp/humidity controlled paint room.

I sold most of the other guns but here is the pic of the .22 I re did. I re did everything including the stock and am very happy with my work considering I am not a gun smith.
The flash went off on my camera and you can see every spec of dust and it makes the barrel look grey but I can tell you it is very black and I used FLAT black. I am very happy with the tone and finish.

This was done with a harbor freight $15 air brush. As you can see the REMINGTON is very thin and still came out great.

That's correct Duracoat will not fill either serial numbers or pitting. I painted my 1911 with desert tan Duracoat and the only thing covered was the laser etching.

Still need to mil the slide for the tritium sights.

Which black was that on the AK? I'd love to do this or a camo to my Clayco but, since it was one of the very first AKs to come into the country, I'd  hate to destroy the collector value. As tough as AKs are, chinese blueing is some of the worst in the world. They built them to last long enough to kill one enemy as far as the finish is concerned. I have a Ruger suppressed MKII and a beater .38 bathroom gun I need to do as well as several mags I'm rebuilding.
