Who all has used Cerakote? I have used Dura Coat, Norrells Moly Resin and GunKote. Of those three I have found Moly Resin the most durable.

In a few months I will be applying a new coating over a fresh parkerized 1911.

All recommendations are welcome but I am mostly interested in Cerakote and your experiences using it.

Please note I plan to apply using an air brush, the same air brush I have used to apply the other coatings I have tried.

Thanks for your replies

Well it appears that I am the only one on this forum that has used Cerakote! Which seems to be really strange. It is great coating. After I had my mags coated by this stuff, I found out how good this stuff really is. They are world wide and it used by gun manufactures. It sounds like SA will finally change over to Cerakote to make a better weapon. Since S&W started using it, others will soon be jumping on it....

I just met one of the Alaska CeraKote finishers this aft at my work. Alaska Powder Coating. He does lots of weapons and invited me by for a look see. Bit of a drive, bout 50 miles but I'm gonna do it. Also called Micro Dyne. They hace a very interesting web site and the finisher swears by the stuff. He normally does light airplane frames etc but is definitely into firearms.

negative , as if ...

I did the bake version. It is not as light as the pictures show.
good luck with the airbrush.I used the recommended HVLP sprayer.it is durable, this one took a chuck across gravel, rail ties and a tree one night.long story, not on purpose.running.it applies as easy as norrels does but the coating is thicker not like watery norrells.

Looks Great.

I am about to order or build the things I need to do a few projects with cerakote.  Can you apply it with an airbrush, as that is what I was also planning to use.

Can anybody give a run down of how it has worked for them, positives, negatives, tips or tricks?

Thanks

you MIGHT be able to airbrush it.it is recommended by NIC to use a typical HVLP sprayer to apply it.norrells is thin and waterlike, cerakote is more like a paint in viscosity.if it sprays on with an airbrush it will take longer.

just spend the $35 and get a HVLP and do it as it should be done.this way you can get the coating on thick as it should be.I bought the $50 "sample" size that is supposed to be enough for more than 1 AR and used %90 of it.also sprayed the stainless barrel.

They make some stuff you can DIY, but I always had the oven baked done. I figured if the applicator screwed it up, he can do it over. I am not good enough to spray my own! Matt at NIC Industries 541-826-1922 (who makes Cerakote) he can walk you through everything you need and where to get it in your area.

Well, I may be out of luck.  I want to do the Cerakote but NIC won't ship to alaska, and Brownells says they won't ship to alaska.  So how do I get this Cerakote up to alaska?  Any ideas or other places to try?
