I am refinishing a mossberg 500 for my dad that has a really crappy spray paint job that is peeling and flaking off.  Do I need to sand off the paint first?  I am planning on having it media blasted, but didn't know if that would take the paint off for me so I wouldn't have to sand it.
I am also adding a surefire forend grip and speedfeed stock, do I need to media blast those as well before I duracoat them?

You should be able to strip it with some paint stripper and then Duracoat it without blasting. What ever you do use some alcohol or the Duracoat tru strip before you shoot the color to it.  You want it clean , (no finger oils on it).

Use paint stripper AND blast it!

Anything that will stick without a grit blast will stick better with grit blasting.

90%+ of surface finishing is preparation.  Do not cut corners here.

So I need to use paint stripper instead of sanding off the old paint?  Is there a better brand then another for striping paint, or just any kind will work?

what type of media should be used on firearms when blasting?

For pre-DuraCoat you want to use Aluminum Oxide, NOT glass beads.  I would use at least a fine (150-mesh) size grit or finer.  If I had the choice I'd go with 220-mesh grit.  You just wanna very lightly rough up the surface, not erode away the metal!  If you don't feel comfy doing this open the yellow pages and find a local grit blaster.  He'll be happy for the work.

As to which paint stripper - anything you can find at the hardware store should remove the average bubba paintjob.

Does it make any difference if I use alumahyde?

Dunno, I've never used that.  Just DuraCoat.

Do I need to bead blast the new parts that I am putting on it as well (stock, foreend).  I would think because the Duracoat would need the grip, but it never hurts to ask.

DO NOT USE GLASS BEADS for pre-DuraCoat blasting.  Use aluminum oxide.
