I am about to start a refinishing business if/when the FFL clears. I plan to offer bluing, class II anodizing, parking and spray on/bake ons. I have been working with the bluing recipes from Blindhogg and Brownells. My question is this, does anyone know of a recipe for that gorgeous royal blue Colt used to use on the Pythons? I have always had a thing for those revolvers and I would really like to get close to it in color. The blues I have tried come out pretty dark when they get good surface penetration.

Thanks,
Rick

I believe that blue was done with in an oven and intert gas atmosphere. So it is form of heat blue.

Dry salt maybe?

No dry  salt bluing is tempering blue NOT recommend for any heat treated part, like Colt frames

IIRC it was the incredible polish that made the difference more then the blue itself.

Yeah, they were slicker than owl shit on a babies ass weren't they? I am just crazy to learn how they did it. I know the polishing effects the blues reflecection/refraction so that it either looks a little more blue or a little more blackened, but it still seems like the blue was more of a royal blue. Maybe I'm just getting old and I am remembering something that didn't exist. I dunno, I went to look at one yesterday and it was polished stainless, not blued.

Oh no, you are correct. It was called Royal Blue and it was so beautiful and deep it looked like you could spring off a diving board right into it! Sorry to say I don't know shit about how it was done but if you figure it out, please let me know!

No problem. If I ever find it, I'd be happy to share. I feel like I'm on a quest for the Holy Grail or something. I guess that makes me Monty Python.

Still looking. Any web/internet suggestions. I've exhausted about allthe combinations on Colt, bluing, Python and royal blue I can think of.
