Painting (Finishing) = Preparation. There are a lot of decent products out there for cleaning and degreasing surfaces prior to finishing--although some can be are pretty harsh especially to plastics. One cleaner Ive been very satisfied with is DX 579 Metal Cleaner put out by PPG (automotive paint industry). Besides metals, I've used it on polymers used in the gun industry. It's cut with water using a 1 part cleaner to 2 parts water. So 1 quart will make 3 quarts of cleaner. That's nice because you mix only what you think you need. It's non-flamable an gets deep into the pores of the metal to clean and lift oxidation and surface contamination. You can submerge it in solution but I prefer to use a paint brush to lightly work it over the surface keeping everything wet for 1-3 minutes. Afterwards rinse the parts with water, let dry and apply your primer or finish coat. I wear nitrile gloves during the process to prevent skin oils from contaminating the project. Besides several paint projects, I've used this to prep a number of AR receivers, a Knight Armament Rail System and a collapsable stock to receive Norrells molyresin all with great adhesion. I think you'll be satified with how easy it is to use to prep the surface to receive your choice of finish. Good Luck! |
