I am putting a stainless steel barrel on an AR15 and don't want the bright contrast of raw stainless on black.  I would like to parkerize it, but have been told it's not possible.  What is available to finish this that isn't a spray on finish.  I don't know of anyone with the proper equipment to blue stainless in my area.

Stainless steel cannot be blued or parkerized.

Robar makes a finish for stainless that is matte black.  It is tough, adherent and slick (slippery like Teflon).  I have it on three rifle barrels.  It is a good thing.

I've seen a lot of bead blasted stainless barrels that look good to my eye.  They appear to be a matte, medium grey not shiny, silvery steel.

You said no spray ons, so I won't mention Duracoat.  Oops, I said it.

Duracoat make a color for parkerize, it is called Parker, just degrease and sandblast the barrel so the duracoat has something to grab onto and paint it parker.  Bake in the oven for 1/2 hour @ 180 degf.

You can blue stainless steel with special blueing salts, but they are expensive so most people to not do it.  I was just looking for something to do that wasn't a spray and bake thing that was close to home.
