I have a Remington 700 VS with a Matte finish on it. I bought it early-mid '90s and I need to refinish it. It has been more of a safe queen until now. Whenever I take it out and shoot it gets a rubdown before going back into the safe. I just had it threaded for a suppressor and while it was out noticed something. It seems to have a brownish/rusty tint to it all over. It's not just one spot, but the hole thing. I'd like to refinish it in Norrells, but my oven isn't big enough to support it. I know I could build a long oven, but haven't.

My main question is what type of finish does it have? Is this bluing or some other parkerizing? Can I just steel wool it and then Durakote over it?

The VS rifles were a matt blueing.  Steel wool is not going to let the Moly stick very well.  Some oil and rag may help with the rust or rust color.  If not I would suggest getting it blasted first for the best finish.

Yep, I can get it blasted. However the issue is the oven big enough to bake it.
