Hey guys, just wondering whats the best method to use when degreasing/prepping parked parts. I bought some acetone and also some brake cleaner on top of the trustrip and simple green that i have already. Shawn |

I usually use simple green and a brush to scrub and degrease really cruddy pieces. The fact that I am rinsing metal parts with water makes me uneasy, but parkerized parts will do well. Do it in the sun or warm them in the oven (preheat) so the parts dry nice and fast. Typically, I just spray everything with brake cleaner into a coffee can (wear gloves and keep your mouth closed). The blasting and flushing effect of the spray is good. I lay all the parts into a cardboard tray lined with aluminum foil so that after coating the bits I can just lay it back in there. I acually bake the whole tray in the oven. I would avoid using acetone as the fumes will cause you to pass out. Wiping everything down leaves behind mass amounts of lint (no matter what you use). It also evaporates so fast that if you were to try to spray it out of an airbrush to try and blast the crud away, it would vaproize before it hit the part. The high evaporation will also cause a cooling effect and the parts will then condense water on the surface (coating over a layer of water is bad, as in not good). |
