Hey there, odd question. I figured the y'all might know.  I have a pixel and was fooling around with a set of PVS-14s when I noticed a blinking light on the face of my phone that could only be seen through the PVS-14. I never knew there was an IR strobe active on my phone. WHY is there an IR strobe on my phone that's always on? What is it's purpose?

SkynetGoogle has a fleet of Reaper Drones at its command. Depending on your designation (kill/save as a slave), the phone will blink the correct strobe pattern on your phone on Judgement Day.

Good luck.

It's on the front of your phone.. it's there to shut the screen off when you put it up to your face.

Fun fact, Apple Watch has a very rapid blinking IR at the bottom as well.

It is a proximity sensor, flashes an IR led and depending on the intensity it sees it reflecting, or not, back, shuts the screen off if needed.

All I know is iPhone 5S does do the same thing, but I haven't observed a 6S doing that.

So the new question is, if I shine an IR laser or flashlight at my phone... will it go to sleep?

Ah, ok. Makes sense that it's a proximity sensor. Thanks.

I cannot speak for your phone but I saw a piece of industrial gear start acting goofy immediately after using a programmable strobe nearby. There are a lot of devices around us that use IR control.

I had to find out, went and grabbed the V1 out of my truck. Yep, while on a call, blinking the light will kill the screen.

We should have an app that activates the IR flood in the same way they use the camera flash as a flashlight.

My neighbors electric meter has an IR led that is visible to my security cameras at night. I cannot see it with my naked eye.
