Hello folks,
Pulling the trigger on a laser in the next week or so and wanted to re-vet my thoughts first

Small animal night hunting... Planning on using as aiming device with head mounted pvs14 through an Elcan specter DR

Anything else in that price range you would do different?

Thank you

D2 is currently king of IR Illum + IR Laser on the civi side.

Only downside is that it is beefy.

A3 is 4oz lighter, but has a weaker illum source.

ETA: I have a D2, it's awesome.

As far as Steiner Lasers go, its the best one, arguably the most reliable of all of them and as was stated the Diode based illuminator is much better than the laser based ones on the A3 and ATPIAL-C, however it is somewhat visible to the naked eye close in so from a tactical standpoint its a serious consideration for LEO and home defence individuals.

I have four DBAL-D2s and one ATPIAL-C.

The ATPIAL has a lower smaller footprint and is less weight but I never have any trouble shooting out any of my ACOGS or ELCANs with either the DBALs or ATPIALs installed on the top of the rail near the muzzle.

By far the IR Illuminator on the DBAL-D2 is about the most powerful integrated IR Illum you can get, almost as good as a SPIR for long range illumination.

Both their IR lasers are identical, although you can get a neutral density filter for the DBAL-D2 from TNVC to cover the IR lens and mute the IR down about 10X to a precise non-blooming dot at 200 yards at night visible with NODs, do not know of a filter for the ATPIAL?

The red visible laser on the ATPIAL-C is virtually worthless during the day time and hardly usable even at dusk, whereas the visible green laser on the DBAL-D2s is pretty good in the woods during the day and absolutely fantastic at both dawn and dusk for long range instant shooting.

I nailed these two hogs the dusk before last with my KAC-15 SBR with the DBAL-D2 visible green laser at 75 yards in about two seconds, one 70 grain Barnes TSX through each of them, DRT:

This one took a Barnes TSX at 75 yards also with the DBAL-D2 green laser last weekend:

Did I say I like the green lasers way better than the red ones????

I don't know, never have had that problem with any of mine, plus the CR123 battery lasts forever!

Are you having some kind of problem with yours?

The problem is not with the D2 it's when people try to run a Surefire switch with the D2. The plug on the SR07-D-IT for example, does not sit in deep enough. You can trim the plug to fit better.

Buy used.  The D2 does not hold its value well at all.

Hello Sky,
Would like to ask/confirm a couple of things if I could

On your Elcan / Acog comments
- you use the Dbal D2/ Elcan and a head mounted 14?
- I thought there was problems running a 14 with the acog, some sort of tube burn in or something?

Appreciate the time

Can any of the current ir laser / illuminator setups use AA batteries?  The Steiner SPIR illuminator appears to have had a AA variant at one point, but I don't see any in stock anywhere or any other options other than the older Steiner single laser units. The illuminator is more what I am looking for, the multi-use units are something I can see working into though.

The ACOG 4X32 TAO2 LED and ELCAN scopes that I use all have NV compatible electronic reticules, no problems whatsoever with anything.

I talked in length last week to TNVC and went with the A3,  Price, weight and the IR illumination difference between the two.   Both are solid units.
