hey guys need some advice MAC just put up a vid on pig hunting and im starting to reconsider my setup. Ive been putting together a dual tube setup and got one pvs14 wilcox g24 dbal i2 and mod armory dual bridge. I was planning on getting my second pvs14 in the next two weeks OMNI 8 was starting to think maybe id get a thermal clip on instead or maybe a monocular. Any advice is appreciated.

After hunting with one PVS 14 on a helmet, and then two helmet set ups for a buddy, then a NV scope, then a Thermal 320 scope, adn then a 640 thermal scope, and then trading in one of the PVS14s for a thermal handheld (this over the course of about 5 years), I can say once I got a thermal, the helmet started gathering dust. Current set up is a 640 3x thermal rifle-mounts scope, 320 Pulsar handheld spotter, and maybe a PVS 14 on a helmet it if is really really, no moon, no stars dark out and / or doing a lot of walking or golf cart driving in unfamiliar areas. A weapons-mounted scope, either NV or thermal, is superior to laser and helmet mounted 14 for shots past 100 yards. All of the stuff here is of course, in my humble opinion.
Several yearss ago when I asked basically the same question after saving up and buying a PVS14 and helmet and IR lasers, someone that has done this a lot longer than I have sent me a PM and basically just said "Thermal beats the $&^% out of NV for hunting." I was a bit insulted and mifffed and now completely understand his point and agree 100%- as it applies to the TYPE of hunting I do. |

I'm running a PVS-14 on my left eye for general vision and an IR laser for NV aiming. I have an IR Defense MKII thermal scope on the rifles for thermal imaging/aiming and making videos. I use it with my right eye. Seems to be adequate for killing hogs and coyotes.

I've been through waaay to many $thousands$ on NV gear including Mod 3 and ANVIS 9's and here is what I'm running right now that is working great so far......
Handheld Pulsar thermal for spotting ( we have a screen mounted on the dash connected to the Pulsar. Unplug one wire and free to leave the truck with it) Helmet mounted PVS-7 gen 3 ( for walking to and from the pigs, Pulsar thermal around my neck if needed) Weapon mounted Dbal IR for close work if needed Weapon mounted Armasight Predator thermal scope for 95% of my shooting. We also have a gen 3 Raptor mounted on a rifle stock for long range spotting (identification) if needed. You can spend a lot trying to dial in your setup. I know this first hand! So far I'm extremely happy with what I have now. |
