So I'm about to make the plunge into NV and I have a few options that I'm considering and wanted to get some input from guys on here who may have the same or similar setups. I am not Mil or LE so my use would be hunting/ recreational, but i still want something with good image quality. With my NV budget I'm looking at getting either of these setups:
TNV/PVS14 Gen 3 FDE MTEK Flux V helmet Wilcox G24 mount and dovetail adapter AB Nightvision Mod3 Gen 2 Comspec from Nightgoggles MTEK Flux V helmet Wilcox G24 mount AB Nightvision Mod3 Gen 2 Plus from Nightgoggles With the first two I have enough to get everything I need to mount the goggle to a helmet. The 3rd option I can only get the goggle initially and keep saving for the rest. I'm torn between getting the dual Gen 2 or mono Gen 3. I'd obviously rather have a dual tube setup but I'm concerned about the loss of image quality going from Gen 3 to 2. I also like the ability to split the Mod3 and give a partner a mono. I don't know anyone else with NV so that's a good feature. Any advice from experienced users would be greatly appreciated |

$5000. It's flexible by a few hundred. With the Gen 2 binos with tax and shipping I'd be in at $5100. Quoted:

What is your overall budget? $5000. It's flexible by a few hundred. With the Gen 2 binos with tax and shipping I'd be in at $5100. Get a Team Wendy LTP bump helmet and purchase the binos with the $300+ you'd save... Or get an Ops-Core bump helmet and have over $400+ more for Nods.. Either way $600+ for a non ballistic helmet seems pricey. I'd save money on the helmet to spend it on better NVds. |

I had read on TNVC's website where the Ops Core Base Jump isn't recommended for binos. It's $199 and I'm not sure on the Team Wendy LTP? I might have to do some research or shoot TNVC an email Monday and try and find out. If they will work with binos that will be route I take. I'd rather have more $ for better nods |

Not having tried the MTEK but reading from people who have used it and seeing how it is shaped I could guess it really is better with binos than a TW is. I like the dial system in TW, but it does flex a bit and thus requires you to set the straps quite tight to ensure the helmet does not drop forwards with weight. I bet the more rigid system and lower attachment point in MTEK is better in that regard. Though this is partly just speculation, the difference might be smaller and certainly does depend on your head shape too. That said a TW LTP is just fine with binos, but drooling around the MTEK a little here Considering the options you gave, I would personally not go with the Gen2 bino, Gen2+ minimum. Helmet mounting is a big thing and would keep that as a priority. In your shoes I would probably get a used PVS-14 instead and continue saving for the binos, then sell the PVS-14 for almost if not exactly the same price you got it for. If new is a must, then not sure with which you would lose less money when upgrading. The Gen2 tubes might be harder to sell unlike Gen2+ if you would someday upgrade then to Gen3 binos. |
