Which one and why? I see the mini14 appears lighter and a little smaller/compact than the pvs14....... Thats always a plus for me.
Do you guys prefer one over the other? Or just toss a coin...........which would you go with and why |

PVS14 has a broader range of users/manufacturers and thus has more choices in accessories and more easily accessible replacement parts. It's the Jeep Wrangler of the NVG world.
I went MUM-14 because i got a screaming deal on one. I really like mine. Major cons. It ONLY takes MX-10160 tubes (no manual gain control) and relative lack of mounting options. As far as I know, only NIVISYS is still making MUM-14 housings. |

PVS14 hands down!
First, because the MUM is out of production and getting any parts you need TODAY can be tricky, nevermind what the parts situation will be like in 3-5 years. Second, because the MUM-14 had several known issues. If you forget to press-then-turn for IR, you can easily break the switch knob or the switch guards on the housing. The switch itself can burn out and require replacement or rewiring. The ocular assembly can be over tightened or loosened and you can crack the ocular locking ring without too much difficulty. The PVS14 has none of these issues with delicate parts. Also, these problems are part of why there is the MUM-2 and the GT14 and the various armasight "kind of like a MUM" monoculars out there today. Third, because the weight difference is really only negligible against a single battery PVS14. The weight difference was more considerable when a PVS14 had the 2x AA battery housing. In the MUM's defense they are nice little monoculars, the optics had superior depth of field, more useful field of view and shorter overall length. If somebody had more of the dirt cheap ones available that were kicking around a year ago, maybe I would buy more of them! |

Does not Nivisys manufacture the MUM-14? Or are both the Insight MUM and Nivisys MUM-14 out of production? Nivisys even came with a new bridge some time ago and I would be surprised if they'd do that if it's no longer coming out of their lines. Nivisys showed an interesting MUM-14A proto and sold some even, looked it had fixed the issues the MUM has and retained all the benefits. Too bad it didn't get any traction. Between these two, I too would suggest PVS-14 and agree with everything said. It really has no negatives compared to the MUM except it's weight and depth of field (which comes with a plus of little better light transmission). The resale value and general interest in used market is much better for PVS-14 too if you ever plan to sell it. But do you have to choose from these two? Have a peek at the Mod3 from AB. It's a modular binocular, but you can purchase only one side if you like and later upgrade to a bino if you'd like. Uses PVS-14 optics. |

I have no idea how to build one........I'm a straight newbie when it comes to NVGs and most

I would like this to be true! That wasn't the info I had gotten when I was looking for parts about a year ago. Did you get a price for a complete body? Quoted:

Nivisys insists they are still producing new MUM-14 bodies as of a week ago. I would like this to be true! That wasn't the info I had gotten when I was looking for parts about a year ago. Did you get a price for a complete body? $1100 for the whole kit (body, skull crusher, bag, batteries, adapter, etc) Call Nivisys at (480) 970-3222 and ask for Juan Toledo. It was he who told me Nivisys are still manufacturing MUM-14 (standard). Good morning lilMAC25,
The MUM-14 is in full production with no end in sight. It is a great product that it fills a need in the night vision market; it is the smallest and lightest monocular system with a capability to go 66 feet below water and it is incredibly versatile (head mounted, helmet mounted, weapon mounted, dive mask mounted, handheld, you can adapt it to a camera/video or a spotting scope, etc.) It uses either a single AA or a single CR 123 battery. You will not be disappointed. Best Regards, Juan He offered me the NIVISYS MUM Dual Bridge for $452. I was sorely tempted, but the weight was a bit excessive, IMO. |

Its like 315 without glass or a tube, so you would need a quote on an assembled monocular, or buy the parts and build it yourself. Some retailers might be cheaper than others, and i'm not sure what labor on a build runs as i build my own gear.
Sad.. the mum is almost 2x the price of a pvs-14. For the consumer market in the states, they priced themselves out as an option. |
