I understand it's not a a PVS-14 gen3, but I don't have the cash for one of those.

Is the ATN DNVM a good budget monocular?

If so, would you get the 2X, 4X or 6X magnification?

I have $500 to spend, is there a better option without going over budget?

With under $500 you are usually limited to systems that need active illumination to work. That works as long as you are not crammed in a dense forest with branches & bushes blooming out the view.

At around $500 starts the used market for old Gen3 monoculars and with good luck you might score a Envis or a PVS-7 with some older tube that still will work with no illumination under most circumstances.

After I read your post I took my call of duty goggles outside, and with my Streamlight Tac IR I could see stuff at 300 yards even with these toy goggles. Now it was very blurry at that distance due to the low resolution camera but the area was illuminated. If the goggles had more magnification I could likely make out more detail.

I'm going to guess that with a very powerful illuminator like the Streamlight Tac IR you can see a few hundred yards with them. The more zoom will let you make out more details at those distances but greatly decrease your situational awareness and navigation abilities.

We would need to know what you want to do with them to answer the magnification question.

As I stated earlier you should keep saving, as you can get an early Gen3 pvs-7 for ~$1,200

I played with one of the DNVMs briefly a long while ago.  Would not recommend.

I would never buy anything ATN unless I got a VERY good deal used. It would need to be dirt cheap. Just my .02
