So I am pulling the trigger this week and I am 90% set on a Gen3 ITT Pinnacle tube. I have been looking at TNVC the last 2 weeks but just came across the ModArmory PVS-14. ModArmory has a ticket about $700 higher than TNVC but there was some wording I wanted to see if you all could clear up. Below in bold is their description for their hand selected tubes; I am completely new to this but I felt I understood that all Gen3 tubes will exhibit Fixed Pattern Noise "HoneyComb" at a particular brightness? The same goes for Scintillation except that it occurs at a particular low-light environment? So how can they be non-existent? Last between the OMNI VIII & Pinnacle tubes is their one that is likely to have a higher SNR greater than the minimum 24:1 spec? Thanks
ModArmory PVS-14 Hand Select Definition: No bright spots, no 3,000ths or larger spots, no scintillation, no shading, no fixed pattern noise, no chicken wire, no honeycomb, etc. etc. etc. |

Marketing basically. They will pretty much all show some chicken wire with the right conditions, looking at a white wall with a bright IR source for example. They will definitely show scintillation when it gets really dark. Both of those will generally be reduced if the individual tube has really crazy high specs, specifically the SNR with regards to scintillation.
Of the L3 & Pinnacle tubes, from what people are posting here, it seems that L3 is putting out higher spec tubes more consistently than ITT/ Harris right now. To be perfectly honest, I went with an ITT Pinnacle tube & I kinda wish I had gone with an L3. It really is simply a lottery as to what your tubes specs are going to be, but L3 seems to be putting out slightly higher spec ones & ITT's are known to have somewhat buzzy PSU's and L3's are pretty quiet. Doesnt effect use at all, but I just kinda dig my L3 tubes being so quiet

| TNVC is known for excepting only the best, whether that trumps another companies hand select I'm not sure. However the luck of the draw L3 Omni VIII PVS14 I got from them is exceptional.......SNR 28.3, resolution 72 and good specs all around. Halo is typically larger on L3 tubes, but autogated buzzing sound is quieter then ITT most times, but that's just a general rule of thumb. |
