So I've labeled a number of things around the house with a standard thermal label printer, as well as with simple pen on paper. Playing with my nods the other day, I noticed that none of these labels are visible (the paper looks blank). Any suggestions for something simple I could use as a label or identifier that would show up easily under nods?

You'll have to get away from the written word. I have small items or plastic soap boxes in my pack labeled with illumination tape. Glow in the dark tape, you can write on it however you don't have to you can also cut it into shapes.

For example each label may only be the size of a fingerprint, but a square looks different than a triangle, or rectangle or different configurations of multiple shapes. Also for example my gerber has a small strip of illumination tape on one side of the handle, that tells which one is the blade in the dark, as opposed to the wood saw or file.

It's always best to know your gear arrangement such as on your kit, or the feel of your rifle in the dark, but a knife blade amongst other tools isn't something you want to feel around for. It's not as bright and noticeable as you'd think.

I have had very good luck with labeling and marking maps, tags, and stickers for viewing with NVG.
The darkest (best contrast), most permanent method I used was with India Ink and old-fashioned nib pens. Use waterproof paper if you need it or treat  with a waterproofing product after marking.
The dip-in-ink nib pens are very inexpensive, and you can choose a nib width and style that suite the particular legend you are entering.
