I just picked up some PVS7's and when I use them I see 2 "pictures" one for each eye. Is that normal? They don't seem to line up into one "picture" like binos or other optics do.

I tried adjusting each eye piece and that focuses them but it just make 2 clear pictures. Is this correctable or normal?

I am new to NVG's other than playing with friends etc.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like they werent collimated correctly. Simple fix you have to take them apart and re collimate.

here is the thread that I used to build my PVS7.

How do you do that? Is there a tutorial of that?

I am not very "handy/mechanically inclined" to be honest the thought of taking these apart scares the mess out of me.

If you can build an ar15 you can do this. I edited my last post and added the thread I used to guide me through my pvs7 build.

Get small screw driver, front lens off, take the tube out which just comes right out then take some more screws out and the collimator. Carefully line it up like the guide shows you and re assemble. You will be suprised how simple and fun it is to do.

Also I would recommend getting canned air and blowing air in it every step you take putting it back together so that dust does not get in and make it look like you have blemishes.

In that thread you reference, the collimator looks to be installed 180 deg off unless that notch in the collimator is not supposed to fit into the corresponding protrusion on the housing.  If it is not supposed to install that way, what is the purpose of the notch?

I'm the person who posted the picture and you are 100% correct, just never went back to change it.

Not sure of the protrusion in reference. I installed it just as was shown in the pictures and mine works perfect. I guess I would have to take mine apart or build a new one to see the protrusion because I don't remember it when I built mine.

Also thanks for that write up, it's the only tutorial for building a pvs7 I have seen online.

Cool thanks for clarifying. I honestly was not sure.  When I repaired my one pvs7 I did not pay attention to the orientation of the collimator and just installed it with the notch in place.  How would one adjust it with it seated that way?

You have slid the eye pieces closer together....right?  They don't just focus by turning but also slide in the rear cover assembly closer together and farther apart.  If they are too far apart you will get 2 images, slide them together they become one again.

It doesn't take much adjustment to get it correct, there is room in the notch for it to move.  TJR

Sliding the eye pieces did not work.

So it looks like I have to take them apart and adjust the collimeter.

eh get it closer to your face. Sliding the eyes should work, I had the same issue when I had mine.

Well I took them apart and the collimeter was positioned like the tutorial and not even close to being even. I flipped it 180 degrees and adjusted them.

They work like a charm now. I noticed a few more pepper spots than I did before and a weird squiggly looking thing in the left side, that I hadn't noticed before. These are only noticeable in a small room like a bathroom with the ir on.

Thanks for all the help fellas. That was fast and easy.

Those are almost certainly dust/hair particles that have invaded the system since it was opened.  A simple cleaning should get rid of them.

How do you clean them? I don't want to damage them.

Same way you clean anything valuable. Boil it.

Clean with fire!

Lol just take some rubbing alcohol and q tips to it then whipe with optic cleaning paper or cloth. Also like I said you will need to shoot canned air in it every step you do while putting it back together .

In your case I would just get a can of air duster and blow off the input and output windows on the tube. Assemble and see if it's better. You can see dust particles on the tube by using a flashlight and shine it sort of sideways against output screen.

Something to keep in mind:

Sharply focused dots in the fov that occur suddenly after opening the device up are usually on the output screen.

Out of focus squiggles/dots that occur with the day filter installed are likely dust/fibers on the input window.
