Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the night vision game. I a county deputy and a member of our SWAT team. we have a few pair of PVS7 goggles that I've used a couple times I'm looking to get a PVS 14 of my own. What do I need to look for and watch out for? I will use these for work and probably a little hog hunting and what not. Already have a FAST helmet and Rhino mount...
Also, what does autogated mean? do I need that? Would this setup be a good start or should I save my pennies and buy new? EE Link |

We also have a very good technology page on our web site that goes over some details that will help. We have some very good LE and Mil discounts on our build line of PVS-14's with ITT or L3 Omni 8 Mil-Spec tubes that are brand new backed up with a solid warranty. Thanks and be safe out there. Vic |

Would this setup be a good start or should I save my pennies and buy new? EE Link I am just going to comment on the EE scope. That is a milspec body shell and it looks to me as the lower battery housing is new looking while the top housing has some wear as well as slight color differences. I suspect this scope started life as a dual battery scope which would mean it is older. Some mark is on the side between the housing and ocular lens near the lock ring. It is taken at a distance so I don't know what it is. The tube has a fair blem in zone 2 which most likely would not pass milspec which leads me to believe the tube has been changed. Lastly the phosphor color screams older tube to me but camera's can mess with color. I need to know more about the tube to determine value. I would pass on this deal until I have tube information. My .02 ETA: To much of a gamble with 0 information about the tube. Why was the picture of the defect (mark) taken at such distance while others are close up. That is the one that should be close so folks can see what the heck it is. Not for me without more information. |

It's a deal at $1200. At $1900 you're too close to a new TNVC PVS-14 to save a few bucks. I would agree and absolute top dollar for a pure gamble would be $1400 for me. Yes autogating is nice to have and is a modern feature. Without going into detail it cycles power to the tube and allows it to be less susceptible to high light damage. It increases bright light environment resolution, less blooming, extends use of tube into dusk and dawn settings and is better for dynamic situations where lights could be flipped on without warning. It is better all around over a DC tube. In the dark woods at night it has little advantage but for all around use it has many advantages. For 3K you can call TNVC and get a L3 Omni VIII with a five year warranty brand new. The latest and greatest. Vic gives a LEO discount so I would call and ask about that. This link explains autogating in more detail than I told you about. http://www.photonis.com/en/content/101-nightvision-auto-gating |
