I will be going on a hog hunt in a couple weeks and am trying to figure out what configuration will be most effective.  I've never been hog hunting before and want to make the most of what I have available.

My question is what setup for night hunting with a shot distance up to 300 yards.

My equipment consists of the following:

  • TNVC PVS14

  • x2.5 magnifier

  • PVS14 scope mount

  • ITAL IR w/ NDF

  • OPS CORE helmet and mount

  • Streamlight Super Tac IR

  • ThermApp

Weapons:

  • MK18 5.56

  • Rem 700 XLR chassis .308

I am thinking to use the bolt .308 with IR laser and IR light and helmet mounted PVS 14 with option of using the magnifier.

What setup would you use?

For the equipment you have put the 14 on your head and ir laser on the AR. If you need to ID something at longer ranges you can detach the 14 and add the 2.5x lens to use as a spotter.  Then go back to helmet mounted and continue hunting.

To be honest most of the time you will be shooting inside of 100 yards or even closer.  Just watch your wind and big boar hogs with a sounder. They are no dumb asses, and seem the hardest to get close too. I've had a many a boars in cultivated row crops on dark nights blow the stalk.  There eyes are better then most give them credit for and there noses will kick your ass.

Good luck on your hunt

I just updated the list above.  I have a therm app to use as a spotter.  how concerned should I be with using the 5.56 on hogs, I would be using xm193 or 55gr Barnes ttsx.
