| Ok so I will be in the market for a NV scope in a few months. My budget will be about $16-1800. This is for the unit as illumination devices can be purchased later. I'm looking at a dedicated scope since it will be going on a 308 win rifle. I'm looking at a pvs4, m845,, a and armasight nemesis 4x. I have plenty of time behind the pvs4 and loved it. What I really want to is how the newer Gen 2 units compare to the pvs.besides just size and weight. |

Well, there aren't really any newer Gen2 units, unless you're including civilian models, in which case the models you mentioned ( except the armasight which I am not familiar with ) will pretty much outperform everything. Unless you go to Photonis-tube Gen2, in which case, you might as well go with Gen3. Regards David

| So the new Gen 2(production wise is what I mean by newer) perform better than the older production pvs4 then? I realize you can't really improve Gen 2 since its already been improved hence the Gen 3 stuff. I would really like a Gen3 unit but its out of my range and can't justify the extra grand + cost. |

Like Cj7hawk indicated there are not a lot of "new" Gen 2 scopes out there. You have the surplus M845 scopes which have older Litton Gen II or III tubes and are going to be of varying quality since they have been around for awhile. You also have the Armasight offerings of which I have not been able to provide a decent review. Then you have the Gen II D740's but for the price that those are commanding you would be better off with a Gen III. The only other one I am aware of is with the NS-520 which was designed to take the place of the M845 and the only one I have experience with.
The Night Optics NS-520 is in your price range and does offer pretty good performance for the costs. It uses a new Photonis Gen II HP tube and has a 2 year warranty from the manufacturer. I have been pretty happy with the performance of mine but you can look at some of my pictures and decide for yourself whether it meets your needs. I purchase mine for $1,750 last year when there were no good M845's available. I was told by the dealer that the NS-520 had a better image then their current lot of M845's but it's housing was not quite as tough and therefore it was somewhat less durable than the M845. He did say that the NS-520's housing was pretty similar to that of the D740 scopes and I think that is probably accurate. Given the costs were the same I decided to give it a try and I have not been disappointed by it yet. Also, if you look at the Night Vision Gen comparison sticky at the top of the NV forum, the guys from TNVC show off the different performance of some Gen II HP stuff and show how it compares to Gen III. Overall, the Gen II HP performed fairly well and it would certainly fill the needs of most night hunters. LINK All of these were taken with no moon and no IR. Even though the sign was close there was no way you could read it with the naked eye. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a57/Mudd262/NS-5204_zps2fee0649.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a57/Mudd262/NS-5201_zps5af24b84.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a57/Mudd262/NS-5202_zpsf6b29494.jpg |

To the OP. The M845 Gen 2 SHP along with the Gen 3's are really an amazing best bang for your resolution dollar. You will NOT be disappointed in these scopes. They are built like a tank AND MADE IN THE U.S.A. and no where else. Our new line are also NEWLY refurbished body housings with new tubes, never used!
The L3 Gen 2 SHP tube will see resolution in the 49-52 Line Pair arena where the Gen 3 L3 Commercial Spec at 64LP.. M845 GEN 2 SHP M845 Gen 3 Vic |

Thanks for the help folks! Reread the generations thread and choice is made. Got permission to spend a little more after tax season and can get a used pvs 14!
Over all it should fit mine and my families needs better. Would havebeen Nice to run it on a 308 but can save for a laser aid later on. |
