So I just picked up an opmod pvs14 from optics planet and the specs are excellent. I'm not sure if I should be concerned because after staring at the tube with zero light input for about a minute, in addition to the random sparkles, I can see a
a darker shadow that takes up almost 1/3 of the image. I can only see this in zero light condition where there is no image and it gos away whenever theres enough light present to make an image. Does anyone know what this is? I'm just worried that this might effect the tube lifespan? Thanks in advance for your help

It's not shading, so don't worry about it. Shading is very dark and is noticeable under all light conditions.

It's most likely just a variation in the sensitivity of the photocathode and those kind of things are normal ( dark spots ) - if it's really bad and is bothering you, then contact optics planet and I'm sure they'll take care of you, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it - It might even be from overexposure to light or similar and may be transient - and running it for a few hours in the dark may correct it.

If you can, take  a picture and show us - use another PVS-14 up behind it to make the image brighter and when focussed, take a picture through that. That will show up the varying intensity of the sparkles much more prominently.

David

Thanks for the advice CJ, I don't have a good camera or I would take a picture. I tried to leave it in the dark for awhile already it still looks the same. The unit was shipped to me with a battery installed and the unit turned on although it did have the day cover on so I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I think I'm gonna send it back to optics planet for an exchange.

Wow, I can only wonder what happened there...

Me too! I am surprised to read that. I wonder how long it had been on for?

Makes me wonder if it's burn-in.

If you look at a blank piece of paper in front of the monocular, do you see an image overlaid? ( like a ghost image )

Yes I do, it takes up about 1/3 of the image. I'm going to exchange for another unit.

Yes, I'd recommend that - It sounds like you have serious photocathode burn. If it was something you had had for a few months, I'd recommend giving it the dark treatment, but given it's new I'd definitely say send it back.

I've ordered 2 from OP and both arrived with Duracell Alkaline AA installed.  The first one didn't come with a data sheet so it was returned, thinking it was a return they sold again.  But, the second unit arrived with the AA installed too.  No problem with either one, and the return was as smooth as a baby's hind end.
