Just got an ATN Thor thermal scope and am wondering what is the best way to sight it in. In 100 degree weather what is the best thing to shoot at for a target?

My hunting buddy has a thermal scope he uses those "hot hands" packs" taped to a target or warm water bottle

Anything with either a significantly warmer or colder temp would do the trick.  Anything from frozen water bottles to chunks of ice would work.  I know hand warmers aren't exactly easy to find in Phoenix, AZ in August.  So cold may be the way to go.  Plus you'll have something cold to drink when you are done shooting.  Perhaps some metal jar caps sitting in icy water may do the trip as well.  That way they target isn't blown up when you shoot it and you have to guess if your zero is right on and not just 'close enough'.

You can play with them various 'targets' around your house before running off to the range to make sure they work.  I would also play with the white hot vs. black hot image.  In my case, with a DiOP Cadet 75 hand held thermal unit, white hot see warm/cold better, but black hot shows more detail.  The black hot may allow you to fine tune the zero.

If you are really hard up for a good hot target, pee into a plastic coke bottle, it will stay hot for hours....

Here are some 100 yard water jugs I blasted with the FLIR T-50...

Ok thanks. I'll try again tonight when things cool down some.  I tried today with heating up a metal washer and nailing it to the target but in this 100+ Texas sun by the time I got back to the gun to shoot it was really hard to see with everything so hot outside.

Try some frozen water bottles.  I know it is 100+ degrees out, everything washes out with my thermal imager and it is really hard to pick things out.  It is worse in sun light as everything reflect the sun and look hotter than they are.  But cold things do stand out in a good way and stay that way for some time.
