Hey there, everyone

I am fully aware of ATN's reputation, especially in regards to russian
tubes, mediocre (at best) CS and all that... I do seem to remember reading,
though, that the PS22 housing isn't all that bad if properly assembled and
used together with a good Gen3 tube...??

Now, a buddy offers me an older, but like new,  PS22 w/o tube and I have
an autogated PVS7 tube right here... well, this got me thinking and I'm all
excited about -maybe- owning a decent "poor man's PVS22" very soon.

What do I need to be aware of? are there several generations of this
housing, it seems newer ads show the PS22 with some mashined/molded
in stripes along the exterior...?

btw, he had a PVS7 tube installed before, so the housing is compatible with
those. I understand that isn't always the case.

Thanks!

Its not like a pvs-14, sure you can drop the tube in, but it may or may not be collimated properly (likely not). Collimation  takes a bit of gear and now how.

i was thinking about one of these and putting my own tube in - like you  , but the guy i get stuff of said i should send him the tube and he would fit it right , as i would never get it right without the proper gear and know how - so that is what i will do - also if you have an autogated tube - make sure  as you can ,do that  it will be able to stand the recoil from being weapon mounted

Is this the PS22 thats on the ATN website for $1899 and you will put a differant tube in it?
I am still learning.Almost pushed the button yesterday but i am still on the fence and can't
let loose the money yet.Need to know more before in get my first NV.
Whats a good tube cost for a PS22 to make it more reliable?

This PS-22 topic has been beat to death in the past.  The truth is you will have at least a 50/50 chance of the scope having severe POA/POI issues out of the box. You can do an archive search here in the NV forum and see the past threads on this system.

I personally spoke of these severe issues with an LE Agency purchasing these scopes and then taking 6 months to get their monies back so they could get the bean counters to buy the real deal PVS-22.

The problem isn't necessarily with reliability, rather POI/POA issues. New tubes run ~1700, and make sure it take the recoil. Also from what I've read pulling the tube and replacing it isn't necessarily really easy and there are at least 2 versions of the housing, one that takes the PVS-7 tubes and another that takes a a slightly different tube (russian?) that is very similar to the PVS-7 tube but isn't. And then you have to collimate the unit, again not really easy. There are some guys that have done it but they have a fair amount of experience and equipment to do it correctly.

If you are new to the world of NV I would save your money for something else.
