I went hunting this weekend with my uncle and got hooked. He has a AR-15 with a Gen-II Night vision scope. I used it most of the night hunting and damn it i really am wanting to get one now. But i am wanting to keep it under 1k for a scope if possible and still get decent quality if that's even possible. I don't want to put down 2k+ for one since its not going to be tactical just predator hunting purposes only. I have a kill light 250 on my .223 currently but the night vision is just amazing lol. Anyone have some insight/experience they would care to share?

I am wanteing one also but it seems athat anything thats even close to any good is pretty expensive.
My brother in law is having trouble with coyotes. We walked all over his 72 acres. Saw all kinds of coyote sign and bobcat as well.He let me set up a stand yesterday.I was all set up and waiting and soon as it got dark i could hear the pack of coyotes coming from my right. They got down out in front me maybe less then 100 yards but i could not see anything. Its just black dark out there.A night scope would have been great. |

You can keep an eye out for a PVS-4 scope. It is a gen 2 scope that performs very well. Add a nice IR illuminator and it has some nice range on it. It is also extremely tough and can take very heavy recoil. They seem to run in th $1K range from what I have seen on Ebay. But I will tell you, it is buyer beware on Ebay. I have got some really nice stuff and I have gotten some absolute lemons. So do your research and make sure they will take a return. Also ask if there are any problems with the unit. Many will 'fail' to mention a problem unless directly asked. Particularly if there is the option to return it.
If you can get closer to $2K, take a look at the M845 scope. They are a pretty good scope for the money. TNVC has some really nice versions of the scope. They pop up on Ebay used time to time. I got one that was really rough and wasn't focused correctly. But I was able to return it and got my money back. |
| One thing is for sure, once you get a good set up you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. For several weeks after I got mine my wife said that I had gone nocturnal, 3-4am bedtimes became common, but I'm retired so I could get away with it. I would kill hogs then set them out within a couple of hundred yards of the house and kill coyotes when they came in to feed. It's almost too easy. |

On Optics Planet this scope has got my attention for a cheap entry level. ATN Aries 410 5X $629 and a Super 450mw Detachable IR Illuminator for $119 Just want to shoot some coyotes... Please don't. Another 250 bucks and you can find/assemble a unit (pvs-4) that won't break or fail AND has resale value because they are battle tested performers. If you must have something gen1 buy a zeiss? from copes dist (5-$600)or somewhere. Heavy but MUCH more sturdy. Most of us into NV have made these mistakes already, just trying to save you some cash. There is always a DIY option if you are handy, theres a few of us who make all kinds of cheap setups that work well. Brent |
