An interesting question - one I hadn't thought of before. There must be a few DIY methods possible.

Perhaps leave a target in a warm place then chill the bullseye with a small piece of ice before aiming?

Or use different materials over the bullseye with different emissivity? That would probably work too.

As would putting something electronic in the target - eg, a warm wire glued to the paper... Or several in concentric rings, running from a single AA battery ( not much heat is needed ).

But I have no idea how it's done elsewhere - I wonder how other people do it?

This is going to be an interesting thread :)

David.

Former TWS testing group member here...

For events where we actually had to zero, we used these:
http://www.letargets.com/estylez_item.aspx?item=CATTIS-1

It's basically a cardboard target with a handwarmer packet in the center hole. The material around it is suppossed to create a clear thermal signature, however we found the thermal signature somewhat blended even with the material around it.

They worked, but where not as clear as we would have liked. Maybe it had to do with the time of day or the sun exposure we were shooting in. If you've got the cash for a thermal sight a $40 target is worth at least looking into.

I would just use a white target with a black bullseye made of a different material...like black elect tape.   Do it in the day time and let it sit out a bit.   I can read signs with vinyl lettering clear as day...literally, on my FLIR 307.

EDIT: found a pic:

Or black with a white bullseye.   The Verizon sign is black with white lettering.  The Z is red and you can even see the difference with that.

The party city sign is white with letters of various colors.

This is what the party city sign looks like in the day:

My contribution is weak. That is what a MRE heater looks like taped to the fence. My neighbors think I am nuts standing outside in the cold taping shit to the fence.

I've simply used drinking water bottles filled with hot water.  I then screw on the plastic cap and stand the bottle in front of a cardboard box.   The bottle looks like an arrow, and you just place the dot or crosshair at the top of the bottle and shoot.  Then you just walk the POI down to the POA.

With your last shot, you shoot the top of the bottle off.  If you can hit that at 50 yards, you are GTG.
