I recently traded for (1) AN/PVS-14. When I turn on and look thru the optic, I notice there are vertical and horizonal rectangles. Although they are faint I see them. Any Ideas on how to reconcile this would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at [email protected].

| Fixed Pattern Noise (FPN) - A faint hexagonal (honeycomb) pattern throughout the image area that most often occurs under high-light conditions. This pattern is inherent in the structure of the microchannel plate and can be seen in virtually all Gen II and Gen III systems if the light level is high enough. |

Can you let us know what kind of tube it is and what the lighting conditions are under use? I agree with the diagnosis, but seeing FPN is really rare on modern tubes under normal conditions - Does the tube appear to be damaged at all? ( eg, bright or dark spots? ) Regards David

I bet you have a PVS-14 body with an F9800 style tube it in. While gen 3, your tube is probably an earlier spec model.
I have a PVS-7 with a MX-10130D/UV tube that has the honeycomb grid as well. It is a Omni V spec tube, so I think it does happen on fairly recent tubes (mines has an exp. date of 04). Also I do think it has been ridden hard and put away wet. It also has a whine to it although it doesn't seem to be autogated (I tested it by putting in 1 battery and a spring then increasing the light). There is not flickering in it, so I don't think it is a short. |
