| I recently traded for a used PVS-14 with pinnacle tube. The unit seems to work well and has only two black specks on the tube image. The only thing that bugs me is that half of the image is slightly darker than the other. The darker portion extends roughly diagonally across the tube image from one side to the other. It is mostly noticeable when scanning across lightly shaded objects. Is this a normal defect in the manufacture or a product of past tube damage? |

It is most likely damage - caused by leaving the tube on and looking at the same bright shape ( eg, a wall edge ) for an extended period of time. Put the lens cover on, wrap the lens in aluminium foil, turn it on with a fresh set of batteries, then wrap it all up well in aluminium foil so no light can get in at all ( make sure of this ) and leave it for 24 hours... Take the wrap off, turn it off ( remember, it's still on ) and unwrap the lens. Now try it again under the same conditions. If there's an improvement, it was probably damage. This technique is good for helping tubes with image burn. Regards David

Quoted: Could it possibly be output brightness variation David? I have a tube with some "brush strokes" in the background that is noticeable in the right conditions. Yes, but if it is, it won't get any better from running in darkness. It doesn't hurt either way - Always a good thing to do under the circumstances. Regards David

Quoted: Thanks David for the info. Does it matter if the gain is set high or low on the PVS-14 using the above described method? I'm planning on wrapping the unit in aluminum foil and putting it in a black styrofoam lined transport case made for a PVS-7. Wow! That's dedicated to making sure it's done right. Most of us just chuck it in the sock drawer. I don't know about the gain. I'd guess best to set the gain to full. Regards David

Regards David Agreed, and don't know if the gain matters but I also turn mine all the way up for this. For the record I also toss mine in a drawer covered by some clothes. Mine or hers makes no difference. Well, at least is doesn't to me. |
| Ok here are the results. After I left the unit on for 24 hrs wrapped with the aluminum foil I did not detect a change in the image. I then wrapped the unit back up and left it on for a further 14 hrs. I took a photo of the image and compared it to one I took before leaving it on in complete darkness for about 38hrs. After comparing the two photos I still didn't see any improvement which makes me think the dark shade is something other than image burn. |

Though if you have photo's, I'd love to see them - are you able to post them here at all? Thanks David
