ok I picked this up rather cheap and it does turn on and has the whining sound like an old camera flash "warming up"
how should this look when looking through it?

I can see an aiming reticle but there looks like alot of black dots all over the center and I am seeing what looks like little green "sparks" when looking through it.

dumb question but where does the battery go?

Your description sounds like you had the lens-cover in place while testing it. Otherwise it sounds normal.

First, good find on a working PVS-3, they are a bit rare. The reticle on the PVS-1/2/3 sights are black circles arranged in a "T" pattern in the center of the field of view. A google search should point you to the AN/PVS-2 or 3 manual you can download or buy that will explain how to use the reticle and give you a picture of what it should look like. There may be other black spots in the sight that can be either dirt/dust or burns on the tube. Clean the objective lens and eyepiece and see if the view improves. If it does not,  you can try taking the sight apart and cleaning the optical surfaces, but that is a daunting task for most. The "sparks" you are seeing are scintillations (or EBI) that are caused by the area being too dark. If you were testing the scope in a closet or totally dark room, or with the lens cover on at night, you might see a lot of them. CJ7 has some great threads that explain exactly what causes them if you have in interest in such things.

The battery is located in the rectangle on the top of the sight. Unscrew the thumb screw facing the camera in your picture, the door will swing open and you should see a battery "tray" with two coin cells in it. Getting new batteries may improve the performance of the sight as well.

Just realized I have a copy of the AN/PVS-3 TM and maint. manual. PM me with your e-mail address and I will send them to you.

pm sent on the books, ok I opened the batt door and there is a 3v button battery and a metal "spacer", i knw the po said he could not find a battery to fit, what size batteries does this use? I am also assuming there should be 2 thumb screws on the batt door not safety wire

also is there a hard case for this scope?

If you look through the TM you will note it takes Mallory RM-930. No idea if they are still made or not. If not, apply 3 volts to the positive and negative contacts and it will work (maual calls for 2.8V, an extra .2 V should not hurt). Murphy has the case and other parts you might need (as posted above).

And if he doesn't you can always try stano. They actually had a g2 conversion for the pvs-3.
