Hello all,
I'd like to get into NV and I'd like to go all out but because NV gear is so expensive I'm only looking at getting one set of NVGs. So I've narrowed it down to the PVS-14 and the PVS-7. I like the mounting options of the PVS-14 and that it stays on the host weapon, ready for firing. My reason for also considering the PVS-7 is that I've used them a lot at work and like the binocular-style set-up (with two eyes looking though the NVGs), and this is something I would prefer over a single monocular such as the 14. So my question to you all is wether or not I would be able to use a head-mounted PVS-7 and say, an weapon with a NV-compatible EOTech and be able to shoulder the rifle and look through the EOTech. Or am I better off doing this with a PVS-14? Thanks. |

What has been said above is all the truth and great advice. Even though you look through the PVS-7 with both eyes you have no added depth perception or field of view over a 14. In fact you have less FOV because your unaided eye on a 14 gives some depth perception and FOV unless you are in pitch black conditions which is rarely the case.
Only advantage I feel the 7 has is balance and comfort. It is well balanced on your head and one of the most comfortable scopes to use IMHO. I like the 7 a lot but it is not versatile and really only good as a viewer unless you use a IR laser. The closed in feeling you get is also bothersome and takes getting used to. If you are fine with the limitations it is a very good and durable scope. |

A PVS14 is a better bet for shooting with a weapon, but shooting with 7's is certainly possible to do effectively with 7's. You need to mount a red dot/reflex style sight as far forward as possible and get it up a little higher than normal-a Trijicon RX30 or Meprolight21 sight are about right.
Getting an IR laser is superior to both though. |
