Is this the same as Auto-gated? Does any Gen2 have it? Specifically does the TNVC Gen2+ GT-14 have it? There's a good deal close to me on a used one.

Autogating and ABC are similar but a little different. Some Gen 2 + tubes have autogating (DEP XD4 XR5). These are high end and very expensive tubes. The Gen 2 + tube in the Gt-14 form TNVC does not have a autogating power supply. It does have automatic brightness control. The Gen 2 SHP tubes are very good for what they cost. Not up to the level of a Gen 3 Pinnacle but they do perform very well.

As Dino said, similar.
They both adjust the brightness the user sees. Although the method and reasons are very different. ABC tries to maintain a constant image brightness so the image doesn't wash out when it's a little brighter, say moonlight. Autogating, on the other hand, is designed to handle much brighter situations, up to and including indirect sunlight. However the tube will still be used up more quickly under those conditions. It's more intended for use around dusk/dawn - Twilight periods. David. |
