So what's the deal on brands that label their NV/thermal products as Law Enforcement/military only? Is there a law prohibiting civilians from such purchases, like NFA, or is it just marketing? I understand the export law is very strict, but wasn't sure about LE non-firearm stuff.

thanks

Some stuff may have co-aligned IR lasers which would prevent direct civilian sales. Other stuff I don't know, although I can only imagine that they are cost prohibitive for most civilians.

Cost prohibitive + LE/MIL demand is high enough that they either don't need/want to deal w/ normal consumers or can't produce them fast enough to satisfy gov contracts so they get allocated accordingly.  And yes, certain items have on-board IR lasers and as such won't be sold directly to civies.  I'd LOVE to get ahold of one of the OASYS clip on units!!

thanks, I get the part that they won't sell to civies, but is it illegal to own? Who enforces that? ATF?

Iirc there is nothing against you owning these devices.  Many items in the last few months that were previously le only have been selling to civis.  Raptors, mtm, pvs22's. The FDA regulates the ir lasers, and they are restricted to le/mil. However, its not in no way illegal to own one.

km is right, they hve relaxed some restrictions.
I bought a mil-spec OSTI AN/PVS-22 and know a guy that bought a mil-spec 6X Raptor (sweet!).
Anything with an IR or high powered lasers remains unobtainable, unfortunately.

Wow.  That's gotta be the priciest semi-auto AR-15 I have ever seen.

There are no laws prohibiting you from owning any of these optics.  Restrictions are simply a manufacturer's policy.  For whatever reason, they will say "LE/Mil only."  Most of the time it is because of government demand being so high.
