I was looking through a Cabelas catalog and saw they were selling NV scopes, i think it was like Gen 2 or something, nothing crazy, low power. But they were cheap, like $400.
Ive been looking to get a rem 700 and the thought "Hey wouldnt it be cool to mount that thing on a bolt gun." I know it wouldnt be a long range precision gun, but it would give me the ability to "own the night". My only major concern is: Can you use an NV scope to make shots during the day (with out using the actual NV) or are you pretty much limited to night time? Also does anyone know a site (Im sure theres something posted here and Ill look) that compares different generations. Obv Gen2 will suck compared to Gen4, but I cant afford 4, so its gonna be 2 or nothing. Thanks. |

First, there is no "Gen IV." Gen III is currently the top of the line in NOD tubes.
Second, in my opinion, I don't think you should waste your money on ATN devices. You will have to learn the hard way, if you do. Save for a GenII SHP or Gen III. Opt for the "Auto-gated" Pinnacle tube and then you can safely use the tube during the day. I use my D-740, with its day cover down, in late afternoon, all the time. Saves having to take two guns out. |

Gen2 is pretty OK. It's not something you would normally be disappointed with, even if it's a cheapie... Unless it was end-of-lifespan, and even then it may be OK. There's not THAT much difference between low-end Gen2 and high-end Gen3... It's pretty obvious to look at, but Gen2 isn't really an impediment. $400 is dirt cheap for Gen2 though - It's hard to find secondhand units in crappy condition for that price. If it was Gen2, then yeah, it would probably be worth going for. Post a link if you see it again. David. |

You can usually use a daylight filter with most weapon scopes, though frankly its usually somewhat problematic. A better solution is to use a quick on/off mount. Or even use something like a PVS-22 or ATNs PS-22 in front of a day optic if you have the budget for it.. Also Gen2 is usually fairly decent for 90% of your likely applications. G3 will usually have somewhat better resolution (sometimes its pretty comperable), and it will work better in really low light conditions. Think overcast, no moon in a forest. Otherwise if there are stars/moon out G2 will work about as well as G3. |

Not to start this thread all over again...Also need to mention the POA/POI shifts with PS-22 units that have been seen on numerous occasions.

Vic Why not link the thread for him? Always an agenda I see... I have NO issue linking...Insure you refer to Wes 1's results as well on Pg. 2. Seems the POA/POI issues matched EXACTLY what I found a LONG time ago. |
