Just wondering how the Surefire Vampire compares to the Torch. I have the older torch model which works well for me, but I'd like it to have a better mount. Any thoughts?

We just got some V2's (don't call them Vampires- it pisses off the Surefire guys because marketing came up with the name and they think it's kinda... "gay."  There words- not mine) for T/E and really like them.  In fact, we are going to start carrying them on our website soon.  I will be doing a write-up on the V2 in a bit, but initial impressions are very good.  But, it is a different application than the torch.

The V2 is dead sexy, while the Torch is (unfortunately) pretty ugly.  The V2 produces a usable IR light, unlike the crappy IR filters.  Plus, it will range past 100 yards (almost 3x that of the Surefire M1).  However, it is not as long range as the Torch with its 500yrd beam.  But, it is not designed for that mission.  You can't discount the presto-change-o head of the V2 either.  This thing is slick.  The one thing I don't care for on the V2 is the tail cap.  I'm not a fan - at all- of the rotating tail caps (G2 style).  I find these tend to get rotated on in pouches and can be a liability.  Also, since Surefire sees fit to ship these things with batteries installed, the tail cap may be tightened too much, causing battery drain in the package (as was the case with mine).

Anyway, these are initial thoughts.  Better write-up to follow.

I'm offended. Send me a OTSI PVS-22 now and I'll call off the army of gay NV users. Hurry, its only a matter of time before they surround your office.

Hey, for all I know, they meant the Old English definition of "happy."  I don't want my combat light to be "happy" either...

Crap I was just getting ready to spring for a torch. The V2 might better serve my needs. I can't wait to see the review!

The bad thing about the vampire is that there is no good way to mount it on a rifle.   It has an hour glass shaped body that isn't really compatible with normal light mounts.

You'll have to get the weapon light version that's like $600 to have a hands free solution.

Not really. I just got mine, and guess what. The head screw on to my M951, which works perfectly.

I wish they just sold the head assembly............ I wonder if all the adapters that TNVC has for their newest LED lamp could get this down onto a scout platform?

Anyone know anything about this:
http://militarytimes.com/blogs/gearscout/2010/01/20/surefire-raid-weaponlight-if-the-x300-and-scout-light-mated/

Its like a weapon-mounted V2 from the SHOT show. 120mW IR output compared to the 10mW of the M1 illuminator.
