I have a USNV PVS-14A (single battery) manufactured in 2008 and am trying to figure out if it an autogated unit.
When I use the unit at dawn and dusk and look towards the sky, the unit seems to dim, and if I put my hand across the top like a sunshade it appears to brighten. There is a manual gain control knob on the front. Using the manual gain control works very well in totally dark conditions, but when it is lighter out, I get very limited gain control using the manual adjustment. I don't hear any high pitched whine like some folks have described their auotogated units, but I'm a little deaf at high freqs anyway. So is it, or not? Thanks in advance. |

If you put the scope right up next to your ear and point it at a brighter light source you should hear the whine. My hearing is not very good and I can hear it if my ear is right up next to it. I can't say every one will do it as it would be impossible for me to listen to them all, but I have used many of them and I could always hear the whine. Some more pronounced then others, but it was always there to some degree. |

Thanks for the replys. I'll have to try activating a light source and listening closely.
I was mainly trying to figure out if the dimming / brightening effects I am seeing through the scope when I look at a lighter or darker area are indicators of an autogated unit. In the early morning, I hunt in an area that looks into the rising sun, so the sky above gets much lighter than the woods I am looking into. As soon as I put my hand over the top of the 14 like a sunshade, my image view brightens up and I can see into a darkly shaded area of woods much better without having to adjust the manual gain control knob. It's a great unit - very good performance and no observable flaws or spots, so I'm really pleased with it. |
| That is a feature of the ABC and would be normal for a non autogated tube. The only dif between a non autogated tube and a pinnacle tube (autogated) is the power supply portion of the tube. I have both and the AG tubes are nice but they are not worth the extra money in my opinion. |
