I am looking for a night vision scope for my AR15 or M1A. I have been looking at ATN,Night Optics USA and Yukon. Are all of these companys good as far as quality an warranys are concerned? I am now mainly looking at the ATN "Trident" or the Night Optics "D-440" or "D-740". Are there any others that you would suggest? Thank You.

Yes, Stay far far away from anything ATN. I don't care if its a doghouse. If you are looking at a D-740 and the like call Victor. He won't let you down. I am sure He will see the post and point ya in the right direction. Anyone can get the housing. Its the tube in it that counts as well as having someone who stands behind what they sell 100%. I can tell you from experiance ATN stuff is not the way to go. Most if not ALL the other forum members will tell you the same thing. Don't walk but RUN!! Away from ATN Anything. I don't think it can be anymore clear then that.

Thank you very much for the info. I have noticed that Night Optics is the only one that provides a tube data sheet with their scopes. If I can I would like to get a scope with a HPT tube. Will these HPT tubes last longer than a standard 2nd Gen+ tube? Thank You.

Hi Wes, (thanks Dino), you can give me a shout as we have some pretty high end Pinnacle tubes for the 740's with data sheets from ITT.  Gen 3 tubes life is in the 10,000 hour range whole Gen 2 is in the 2500 hour range.  Gen 2 SHP at 5000hrs.

To add to the comments by others, "good" and "cheap" should never occupy the same sentence when it comes to NV gear.  That is not at all intended to suggest that one should not look for the best value, quite the contrary.  The best value comes from getting the highest quaility item possible within one's budget, rather than some piece of junk that will soon be replaced without much salvage value.

Victor is very good about taking the time to understand one's particular application, and offer suggestions which he genuinely considers to be appropriate for same based upon his extensive experience with more devices than most of us will ever get the chance to actually use extensively.

Don't sweat the tube life issue; thousands of hours is a lifetime for even the extreme NV user.  Try wearing a monocular for 6-8 hours straight, and then figure that you might do so a couple times a month at most, and you will find that a couple hundred hours a year is fair amount of usage.  I use my 14 probably as much as most, and have only had to change batteries a couple of times in the past 3 years.

I second the comments about ATN…and that’s from experience with their equipment.

I also second the comments about Victor…and that’s also from experience with his equipment and service.

At present my mainline hunting scope is a D-740 Gen III and it’s awesome.  I have one of Victors IR illuminators on the rifle, but it’s primarily used for spotting eye shine.

Contact Victor…talk to him on the phone…in a very short time he’ll understand your particular needs and have recommendations for you on equipment…and best of all, he actually stands behind his equipment and treats his customers like he want them to come back.

Now if he would just find a way to get the prices on the thermal scopes down to where I can afford one
