I have two gen 3 M.U.M.s  when I got the second one I noticed it took a fraction of a second longer to produce an image after it was turned on than my first one does.

If I let it sit unused for a few weeks I'll tun it on and it takes a real long time to fire up (like several seconds)

Tonight I tuned it on after several weeks of no use and it would not fire up.  I could see the light pip flash green as I tuned the switch but no image.  So after several attempts I decided to  to do what I do with most  things that don't work for  me and I beat on it.  One tap from my knuckles and it fired right up and continues to switch on and off normally.

Does anybody have any idea what that is about?

Thanks

Sounds like a short, or the metal springs that connect to the tube may not be making a good connection (trash or corrosion in the way) also corrosion on the battery terminals may be the culprit. If it fails to start again, check to see if the IR is working with your other scope, also check to see if the IR  indicator inside the eyepiece is on, if these don`t work as well, then at least you know the problem is in the wiring and not the tube.

Ink haven't seen you in a while. When you say bang on it did you "tap on it" from the side or the front or back? is there any chance the eyepiece has come a little loose and let the tube slip back just a little? Can you shake it gently and listen for anything moving around?

In the MUM there is no tube retaining ring, it is held in place by the eyepiece.

Now a quick warning here. If the tube has become that "dislodged" to where the power supply contacts can short out, there is a chance of damaging the power supply. you see on the side of the 10160 tube there is a large area and a small area that contact the two metal fingers that supply the power to the tube.

I would not put CR 123s in the unit if you suspect the tube isn't fully seated.

Thanks guys! I'll check it out and report back.

O.K. The eyepiece is tight.  No rattle. Yes Pete, I tapped the side with my knuckles and it came on.

1Paintball:  The darn thing is working fine now so I can't run your diagnostic test, but I will next time.

It has always acted like it takes a 1/2 a second to "warm up"  In fact the image starts out dark and grows brighter when turned on.  Now this normally happens very quickly (like 1/2 a second) -- so fast that if I did not have the other one to compare, I would not even notice.

Thanks guys

Notwithstanding, back to the topic of the OP.  I was having similar issues w/ a MUM which is now being hopefully worked out by the banished himself.  At first I assumed it to be a tube issue but the more it is experimented w/, the more it is indicating itself to be a housing problem.  Glad Insight warranties them  Ok, back to homework...
