Hello I stoped by a local pawn shop and i seen a set of pvs-7's on the wall i ask to see them and there not beat up at all i ask how much time is on the tube he says what does that mean. Then i ask what Gen is it he don't know i say is there any paper work with it he said no i ask how much are they he said $899+Tax it came with a soft case, cap, and another magfier and a head harness so i bought it and they work great i see only one black spot. but i don't know anything about it. Such as what Gen? What type of tube? if it has the gas in it? thanks for the help |
I think you did allright as the housing w internals is worth more than that alone. If the magnifier is a mil spec 3x, it retails for 500 bucks. Do you know whether or not it's a PVS 7 B or D? Also, what color green is the image? In other words is it a darker forest green or a lighter pea green? |
Well the fact that you're describing the image as a pea green and the fact that it came with a 3x magnifier, I'd say odds are you have yourself at least an early gen 3. How would you describe the resolution, sharp or kinda so so? Also, can you see pretty well indoors(lets say in a dark basement or garage) without using the IR illuminator? Usually Gen 2 can't do this well and without lots of "noise" or static. Does the housing have an NSN Number or a date on it? |
Heck, with that hissing/buzzing maybe you also scored an Autogated power supplied unit! Does the hissing/buzzing get any louder when you point the unit at a street lamp or porch light?
|
They actually hum very quietly and when a unit is pointed at a bright light source you will hear this hum get a bit louder. When your wearing electronic ears and the NOD mounted to ones dome, you REALLY hear it! |
ALA "Silence of the Lambs" Sorry I couldn't resist. So you can hear a hiss? That is strange. Usually when you hear something from a tube it is either autogated or something is going wrong. Do you notice any changes in brightness associated with the changing sounds? Nice find though for the price. IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA |
As long as you aren't noticing any changes in brightness or picture quality, you are "prolly" ok. By the way, good find for the price. IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA |

Paintball, Agreed, you can buy them all day long, in conus. But based on described features it sounds a little fishy coming from a pawn shop not far from a military installation. We all know there is a lot of shit showing up in those places that should'nt be there. All the OP needs to do is make a call and have the serial # checked. If they are civvie, good for him, nice find. Something tells me they most likely had a roster number on them at one time. Oh, and "smart ass", if they are stolen, some Joe somewhere is scratching his head in an arms room and paying for them, all because some jackass decided to lift his sensitive item, and that's NOT cool. The last thing an enlisted man with a family needs is to pay for stuff stolen from him on top of everything else he has to worry about. I assume you never spent any time in uniform, or you'd know better, and if you did, it's a damn shame you have this attitude about possible stolen sensitive items, it speaks to your integrity. You may be ok with receiving stolen government property, but I'm not. The OP should make sure they are not hot property, because $900 is'nt a sweet enough deal if it means time in the pokey. Again, if they are legit, good for him, he found a good deal. |
After thinking about this i think they might be stollen cause if the pawn shop sold them for 800 then they only payed out 200-300 for them, and why would someone take 2-3 hundred for nice NVG when they could EASILY sell them for much more on forums...unless they were desperate for cash and did a layaway mabey... if i bought them i would call and check the serial, if it was stolen return them and get money back from pawn shop... |

Generally speaking, Stolen Night Vision Equipment results in 1. a lock down and 2. an Investigation. In the Marine Corps PVS 7s were treated like weapons and ours were even stored in the armory and accounted for daily like weapons. CID checks the pawn shops around bases pretty throughly for stolen gear ESPECIALLY something like Night Vision Equipment. Plus pawn places around bases know the drill and they DAMN sure don't want to be caught fencing something like that. Some pawn people just don't know the value of the what strolls through the door. If your concerned they are stolen call ITT and have em run the serial number. IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA |
I agree with all of the above, the problems I've seen are the stuff coming home from the sandbox in the bottom of a duffel. I see quite a lot around here between Leavenworth and Lost in the Woods showing up where it should'nt be. |
| I don`t know about your State, but S.C. & N.C. pawn shops are required to turn in a list of all items with serial #`s taken in to pawn , to the Police Dept on a weekly basis. When buying from a pawn shop, your receipt is a stamp of legality, it absolves you from all charges regarding stolen property, every thing sold by the pawn shop has been vetted by the local Sheriff`s Dept, that doesn`t mean they won`t come and confiscate it later, but the chances are slim. You have a better chance of buying something stolen from Ebay, (the largest fencing operation in history!) even there it seems no one is watching, I have seen sellers with pictures in the listing of Pvs-7 & 14`s still under warranty, with nsn #`s and Omni V & VI contract #`s. I have seen dozens of these listings from the same sellers, year after year. And what about all the ENVIS scopes for $800.00 to $1500.00? Also the one seller "ntron" has been selling salvage US Mil. gen II and III tubes and parts OVERSEA`S for years!!!, and still is. Still, I am very cautious when buying used, and make sure I can document my purchases. Receiving stolen goods criminal charges are mainly determined by the intent of the buyer, if EBAY can play dumb about being complicit in facilitating the sale of stolen merchandise, so can the buyer. The truth is, it`s to expensive for the Gov. or Law Enforcement to monitor Ebay with the volume of daily sales, can you imagine the effort required to run all the serial #`s on a weekly basis? sad but true. |

Don't take them to the front gate, you will make some poor under paid gate guard a happy man, they will never make it past that front gate. If you are serious about turning them in, take them to the provost marshall's office. If you decide to keep them, you might want to have the nitrogen purge checked before you start taking them out in the weather. |
While the amount paid does seem low, it is not too low to disqualify our fellow NV forum member as a good faith purchaser for value. However, I see the other side as well, I would see if there is a way to pre-determine if they are stolen, and if they are then go the amnesty route, other wise, damn good find.
