I have a gift card from Gander Mountain and have been thinking about buying a Night Vision monocular. Should I save my money for something else? They have a Yukon and another model can't remember which for $200 or so. Thanks for your help. Matt |

+1, if you are going to do NV, do it right. It can be an relatively expensive addiction, but cheap doesn't provide satisfaction with optics in general, and even worse so with NV. I don't have much experience with Gen2, but the difference between Gen1 and Gen3 is profound. I have quality day optics that perform better than Gen1 in reduced light. Unfortunately, they also cost about what Gen2 does. |
Ya know... My advice has always been "save for something better." But here are my thoughts lately. Maybe buying something that is 1st gen and under $200.00 (I would spend NO MORE than that) might not be a bad thing. Some people might need to "stick a big toe in" to see if night vision is for them. Now I am going to add this Gen. 1 isn't much good for anything but checking out the area around your house and not very far at that. Gen. 2 will always be MUCH better and of course Gen. 3 has knock your socks off WOW factor the first time you look through it. By the way I STILL love to flip the ON switch, check out what I am observing and then take a look with my naked eye to see the difference. That never gets old. IPSC_GUY |

cheaper Yukon I would agree with the others, save for something better, but if you have your heart set on this one, it is cheaper here. Was $106 6 months or so ago. They have gone up. I have had a Yukon 3x42 and liked it more than any of the other gen1's I have gotten the chance to play with so if you must have a gen1 monoc, I would go w/ this one. Good luck! |

Go for G2...my first NV was a G1 Russian binocular...I thought it was cats ass...until it gave out (rather quickly)...then I bought a G3 ITT from Cabelas bargain barn. WOW! After that I bought a G2 scope (again bargain barn), and although not G3 quality, it was vastly superior to the G1 technology. I've had 2 ITT G3's, one Russian G1, and currently have a PVS-14...skip the G1. My personal review of the G1 is "looking through a green bottle with a flashlight". G1 is better than nothing, but still not nearly as good as G2. How does the saying go? "In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is King"?. |

Thanks for everyone's input. My gift card is for $300 and I have tons of ammo, and I am trying to figure out what to get. I know since this is a firearms forum, the typical answer is "another guy/more ammo". My current firearms are: Rem 870 Express with spare rifled deer slug barrel and Leupold scope (1000 rounds mixed ammo) Bushy AR15 w/ EOTech and lots extra goodies (5000 rounds ammo) Kimber Pro II .45 (1500 rounds ammo) Glock 22 .40 (2000 rounds ammo) S&W 629 Classic .44 Mag (500 rounds ammo) Baretta 92 9mm (1500 rounds ammo) I need / want a bolt action rifle Rem 700 in .308 and also a Springfield M-1. That being said, I would also like to "see in the night". A PVS-14 is on my want list, but a new baby has seriously dug into the "fun fund". So, I am trying to decide if I should buy something lesser for now until I can get the good stuff. |
I would save your pennies for a full blown PVS-14. If that is really what you need. No reason to spend 1K for a D-300 now, only to spend another 3K+ for the Gen 3 upgrade to the PVS. Just my thoughts. |
