I see alot of people here use a IR laser with NV. I have thought of buying one but to be honest I never had a good laser most of them were cheap red lasers that didn't work worth a damm. I was wondering if a good laser say the Wolverine IR laser would really be of use for varmint hunting compared to a eotech at 100 yards and under? Do they hold impact well when mounted on a QR ring taken on and off, hold impact point from firearm recoil? How easy are they to sight in? Would I be better off to just keep using a eotech sight in the long run? I need a trouble free aiming system that can be sighted in,stay sighted in and hit with good accuracy whenever it is needed at normal ranges 50 -100 yards. Thanks for any feedback!

The nice thing about using an IR laser is the fact that you don't have to keep your face planted on the stock while navigating around. With the NVG on your head your able to move and scan freely, which allows you to select your targets as needed. A quality unit like the wolverine cant even be compared to the cheap visible laser sights on the market. A quality unit such as the Woverine, PAQ-4, PEQ-2 etc. will retain zero under recoil of the weapon and are usually effective at distances that you cant even see using NVG's. Im sure this application would work well with hunting four legged critters as it has worked well for me in the past when hunting two legged critters.

Indeed, I've always thought of wearing a NOD and a mounted IR laser in the "keep your head up, shoot from the ready position" like a video game.  It's sooo effective out to 100m or so for center mass hits, it's scary. Then you get the guys like Wes1 who's idea of center mass hits is a coyote at 100!  For NV rifle scopes, such as a D-760 or 740, Raptor, etc. with their very effective reticles, an IR laser is really not needed except for the units that have a dual high power laser illuminator. These are sometimes needed with extended (over 400m) engagements.

I do have  two NV weapon sights inclueing a 740 Alpha which I use most of the time. But I have many guns and hate haveing to move sighting systems around and re zeroing all the time. Thats why I have some eotech 551's mounted on other guns and thought maybe I might give a Ir laser a try. I just don't know if a IR laser would really give me enough accuracy to hit small targets say 3 to 5 inch dot at 75 maybe 100 yards?
