How many owners of GEN III night vision devices have ever had an out and out tube failure? If so what did it do and if it was under waranty did the seller cover it? I will start off. I have had two tube failures. One was a used ebay tube that "went to air" meaning it lost it's vacum seal and went bad. Obviously being an ebay tube It was buyer beware. I still have it, believe it or not it still lights up, I abuse it horribly by shining lasers directly into it. I still have not been able to burn a spot onto it. The second was a brand spanking new PVS 14 select Alpha blemish free tube. It had a bad power supply that after just a few mintues of use would start to flicker and at each flicker you could hear a small spark from inside it. The distributor replaced it post haste. this was a couple of months ago and I just heard from the distributor ITT has YET to replace to tube. Sometimes ITT can take as much as 6 months for waranty replacement... So the question is how many of all ya all out there in TV land have actually experinced a tube failure? In all the tubes I've had and sold, ONLY one has failed and ITT had it back in 2 weeks. Hope this helps. Edited to add, this was a unit under a full warranty. I do not sell used units so I cannot speak on turnaround times on out of warranty units. I've also not had any returns on any of my older units out there as well so I cannot speak to this. Now I have had Raptor issues, but these have turned out to be NVEC specific build problems, not the tubes themselves. Hope this helps. |
I never had a tube failure, yet. Although i did receive 2 ATN Units in a row that had faulty power supplies. One of them took 10 or more times to start initially and the other flickered like a strobe light half the time it was in use. I didn't have either unit long and got my money back. You want to hear something really messed up? In every ATN owners manual I've ever read, they state that tube flickering sometimes is normal and nothing to be concerned about.

I think you can get that thing alive again if it's still clean inside and if you can take the air out. The reason why you can't burn it with a laser is because electrons don't travel through air - same reason why CRT is vacuum. |
