Ok I know this should "prolly" be in the lights and Lasers forum but you cats will get more out of this here I think. I am going to be doing some IR conversions of lasers. up first is a LDI OTAL and an MR2. Now I was wondering would there be any interest in having an M6X converted? I am thinking a low power IR laser for the aimer and a simple IR filter for the light. this is primarily aimed (no pun intended) at use on a pistol. So would anyone out there in night vision land want or need something like this for their nocturnal needs? IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA |

Edwin The OTAL is a somewhat involved swap. The old brass cased diode has to come out. to do this you have to completely disassemble the unit. LDI seals them up pretty good. It is doable. If I remember correctly didn't you have yours X rayed? The big challenge is finding a selfcontained laser diode that projects a round dot. Also you have to solder the new diode in. Easy for me but some might have trouble with making a splice in the tight confines. The MR2 is a much easier swap. TACO Not sure on a cost yet. Wes Until you posted this I have never looked at the Streamlight TRL as a pistol light. it looks interesting. Cyclic it "looks" like the TRL is just visible light. Also I am looking at making some IR floods that would sit on a 9V battery like the phoenix series of strobes but would be for constant illum. the idea being you could have them out in you area you are observing providing constant illumination thus allowing you NOT to have to paint a target with IR light from your position. Thats a whole lot of work converting a laser to IR. Everyone knows that you can get the OTAL in IR direct from the factory right? What I would like to see is a better, more robust switch connection on the OTAL. 2d, Im totally for folks buying whatever they want, This is still America and all that. But why IR for a pistol? Conventional Wisdom being what it is, the pistol is a secondary weapon and if your transitioning to your pistol then your already well into a fight and are no longer using NVG's Still a cool Idea that I would think about if I ever got ahold of a M6. |
I'm not sure what you mean, but I definitely didn't have mine x-rayed? If you do this to another unit and see what it takes to do it and feel confident in your ability to perform the surgery on another, let me know. I would be very interested depending on the aprox cost. Although pretty neat, the utility of a visible laser on a rifle is pretty limited, ideally an DBAL-I Part #40085 high power IR laser & illuminator would be perfect. Edwin |

Sorry my mistake, I thought you had your OTAL X rayed. I have my OTAL all apart at the moment. The actual surgey will not be hard. Also LDI will NOT sell an IR laser directly to any individul person even if they are LEO or active military. Company policy. As for usefulness on a pistol, I am still debating that myself, HOWEVER and this might sound odd, it would give one a first shot capability if one were in a situation that required exterme stealth till the first shot went off. That's what I am talking ABOUT ! ! ! IPSC_GUY SIERRA II ALPHA guess I gotta go finish them AVS goggles I been workin on. |
Do not debate on this one Pete....You hit da nail on da head..I've NEVER found it odd as I've used and practiced and demo'd IR lasers on pistola's for quite some time. For extreme stealth in which we find ourselves in nowadays where a flash bang STILL causes the baddie to press the detonate switch...Different times call for different tactics in this day in age I'm afraid. |
